Remote CAD Jobs: SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and FreeCAD Work From Home

Computer-aided design was built for screens, so it is no surprise that a lot of CAD work can be done from home. What has changed recently is the variety: alongside traditional design and drafting, AI companies now hire CAD specialists to create and validate the models their design tools learn from.

Kinds of remote CAD work

• Mechanical design — parts, assemblies and drawings for manufacture.
• Industrial design — surfacing and form for consumer products.
• CAM programming — toolpaths for CNC machining, often in Fusion 360.
• CAD data generation and validation — building and checking large numbers of models for AI training.
• Specialist domains — aerospace components, electronics enclosures, circuit and PCB design.

The software question

Many listings name a specific tool, and depth in that tool matters: SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360 and Inventor, and the open source FreeCAD are all common on this site, with Altium for electronics. If you know several, say which you use daily and which you have used on real projects.

Building an application

A short portfolio of three to five pieces — a complex part, an assembly with constraints, a production drawing — is more persuasive than a long CV. If your work is confidential, recreate a similar part on your own time. For AI-related roles, mention how you check models for errors: broken features, bad constraints, unmanufacturable geometry.

Practicalities

CAD is demanding on hardware. A workstation-class laptop or desktop, a good mouse and a large monitor make a real difference. Check whether the role provides software licences or expects you to have your own.

What CAD validation work involves

AI design tools learn from large numbers of correct models, so projects hire CAD specialists to build parts to specification and to check models created by others or by AI. Typical checks include whether dimensions match the brief, constraints are complete, features are built in a sensible order and the part could actually be manufactured. Clear notes on what is wrong — and why — are as important as the model itself.

Getting faster in your main tool

Productivity in CAD comes from mastering the tool's shortcuts, templates and design-intent habits. If a role names a tool you know less well, spend a weekend modelling a few familiar parts in it before the screening task. Being fluent on the day matters more than having used every package once.
