Remote Attorney Jobs: What Lawyers Do in Remote Contract Roles
Updated · 2 min read
Search for remote attorney jobs a few years ago and you would mostly have found document review. Today the list is much broader, partly because AI companies need experienced lawyers to judge and improve legal reasoning, and partly because firms and in-house teams have accepted remote work for many tasks.
The main kinds of remote legal work
- AI legal evaluation — reviewing AI-generated legal analysis, motions and contract summaries for accuracy, and writing better versions.
- Contract review and drafting — commercial agreements, NDAs, leases and transaction documents.
- Legal research and writing — memos, briefs and research on specific questions.
- Practice-specific expertise — M&A, bankruptcy, immigration, family law, IP, healthcare regulation.
- Legal operations — paralegal and legal ops work, often around practice-management tools.
What employers ask for
Most remote attorney roles require an active bar admission and good standing, frequently in a US jurisdiction. Many specify years of experience, and some — often titled 'BigLaw' roles — want experience at large firms because the work mirrors what associates do there. Practice area matters more than general seniority: an AI project testing M&A reasoning wants transactional lawyers, not litigators.
How screening works
Expect a written or interview-based assessment on legal reasoning in your area: spotting issues in a fact pattern, critiquing a flawed analysis, or explaining how a rule applies. Clear, structured reasoning wins. Our guide to showing expertise when you apply has examples.
What the work does not include
AI evaluation and similar contract roles typically involve no clients, no court appearances and no legal advice to anyone. That matters for professional rules: you are not forming attorney-client relationships. Still, check your jurisdiction's rules on outside work and conflicts, especially if you are employed at a firm.
Pay
Legal roles are among the best-paid remote contract work, with hourly rates that reflect practising-lawyer experience. The legal category shows current ranges, and the pay report compares legal with other fields.
A typical week on an AI legal project
Most of the work arrives as tasks in a web tool. A task might present a short fact pattern and an AI-written analysis, and ask you to rate it, identify every error and rewrite the weakest section. Another might ask you to write a hard question in your practice area, then a model answer with citations to the correct rules. Lawyers on these projects describe the work as closer to supervising a junior associate than to drafting from scratch.
Preparing your application
- List your bar admissions with jurisdiction and year.
- Name your practice areas in the order you know them best.
- Give one example of complex work, described without confidential detail.
- Mention legal writing you've done: briefs, memos, articles, training material.

Often, if your firm allows outside work and there are no conflicts. Check your employment agreement and your bar's rules first. See contract work alongside a full-time job.
Do I need a US bar admission?
Many roles do, especially those focused on US law. Some projects seek lawyers qualified in other jurisdictions; the listing will say.
