Role Title: Student Loan Specialist

Role Type: Contractor

Location: United States (Remote)

Time Commitment: 15-25 hours/week, short-term project

The company is looking for Student Loan Specialists to help evaluate and improve AI systems on federal student loan topics. You’ll use your borrower counseling experience to check that questions sound like ones real borrowers would ask and that answers are correct and useful. Accuracy comes first. No AI experience required; your domain knowledge is what matters.

Scope of Work

  1. Review sample federal student loan questions, identifying and flagging those that do not reflect real-world borrower inquiries.
  2. Draft and refine rubrics that outline what constitutes accurate and comprehensive answers to repayment, forgiveness, and relief program topics, such as income-driven repayment (IDR) plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
  3. Expand rubric coverage to include loan servicing challenges, deferment, forbearance, and default management scenarios.
  4. Evaluate AI-generated answers using your rubrics, thoroughly checking for inaccuracies, missing details, or outdated guidance.
  5. Provide concise, constructive written feedback to the project team asynchronously, supporting ongoing improvements to answer quality.
  6. Spot and communicate instances of incorrect guidance, ambiguous borrower communication, or problematic servicing advice.
  7. Collaborate with other experts as needed to ensure rubrics and feedback reflect current federal student loan practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. At least one year of direct experience advising borrowers on federal student loans in contexts such as nonprofit counseling, college/university financial aid offices, loan servicing, or default management.
  2. Demonstrated expertise with federal loan repayment strategies, income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, forgiveness programs (such as PSLF), deferment, forbearance, and default resolution.
  3. Practical knowledge of loan servicing operations, servicer-related challenges, and strategies for communicating with borrowers effectively.
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical guidance clearly and efficiently.
  5. Experience reviewing or developing guidance documents, rubrics, or training materials in the student loan field.
  6. Comfort participating in a remote, asynchronous project and providing actionable, detailed input via digital platforms.
  7. US residency and familiarity with current federal student loan regulations and practices.
